CanSkate is the flagship "Learn to Skate" program offered by Skate Canada, the national sport governing body for figure skating in Canada. CanSkate teaches the basic fundamentals of skating in a fun and exciting group environment. Lessons are led by a Skate Canada certified registered professional coach with assistance from program assistants. The coach to student ratio is a maximum of 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate. The CanSkate program focuses on the development of fundamental movements organized in six stages of learning with skills arranged in progressions. CanSkate skills cover Balance, Control, Agility in each stage of the following badges: Stage 1, Stage 2, Stage 3, Stage 4, Stage 5, Stage 6. Once the skills on each stage are mastered, a badge is awarded.
Skaters wear figure or hockey skates. A CSA approved hockey helmet is mandatory. Layered clothing and mitts/gloves are recommended. Skate guards are required
